Portals Projects - Run the Race!

Welcome to Portals Projects! Each week we share projects that foster community building, creative thinking, problem-solving and character development. Invite your student(s) to pick a project that interests them to work on for a day or a week. Encourage them to share their plans, products or performances with the Portals community so we can all celebrate and grow together.

Week 15 - Self-Discipline

1 Cor. 9: 24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Goal Gallery

It’s time to celebrate all the goals met in 2023! Make a physical or digital gallery with all the artifacts (pictures, charts, models, graphs, videos, bookstacks, etc.) that showcase the ways you grew in 2023.

Spiritual Workout

Runners have to be disciplined in exercising their muscles and building their stamina. Likewise Christians must be diligent in taking time to practice spiritual disciplines - studying the Word, praying, fasting, simplicity, submitting, serving, confessing, worshiping, and praising. Pick one to exercise more this year and make a “workout plan” for when and how you will do that spiritual discipline.

New Year’s Eve Ball Drop (Destination Imagination)

Challenge: The Times Square Ball Drop in New York City is scheduled to start in 20 minutes, but there’s been a malfunction! Can you help save the day? Your team will design and build a New Year’s Eve ball that can drop at least 2 feet. You will also create and present a performance that includes your ball drop. Your performance should be at least 2 minutes long.

Suggested Materials: Paper, cardboard, crayons or markers, tape, string or yarn, paper clips, craft sticks, balloons, one string of lights.

Too much Tech Time

Help! I spend too much time on technology.  What are some creative ways I can limit my time on my computer and phone?

Game on!

Imagine you are an explorer and you have discovered a new land. You observe the native children playing a game. Write out the rules and desired outcome of the game as far as you can tell from your observations. It can be as realistic or fantastical as you want.
