Instructional Approach and Philosophy

True Hope Schoolhouse uses a multi-age, competency-based approach to instruction. Students learn at their own developmental rate and learn in fluid groups that are determined by mastery not standardized age-based grades. Direct instruction in math and language arts is given in a small group or individual basis by the learning facilitators at that student’s instructional level. Bible, history, science, and other pursuits are taught in a multi-age format with individualized assignments given at the student’s academic level.
Our program and curriculum are not based on one specific educational method. Based on decades of research and experience, the Portals Academy curriculum creators have drawn from a number of effective models to design learning that is Christ-centered, Literature and Project-based, and situated in authentic and meaningful experiences.

Teacher

I'm Mandy McRaith

From the time I was little, I have dreamed of teaching in a one-room schoolhouse.  After two years teaching in public middle schools, God introduced me to the visionaries of Portals education. It has been an incredible blessing to work with them the past two years, learning how God made us to learn and creating tools to help parents and educators like me to effectively disciple the next generation.  Now I'm ready to return to the classroom or rather schoolhouse!
